Maco Sateen denotes Cotton Sateen bed linen made from particularly long-staple cotton, frequently of Egyptian and American origin. These fibres make possible extremely fine yarns, which makes the fabric especially light, smooth and durable. High-quality cotton Sateen can, however, have equally excellent properties if the fibre quality is right. The weave density, finishing and workmanship are at least as decisive here as the origin of the cotton.

With Cotton Sateen bed linen from premium manufacturers there is an important special rule that many customers are not aware of and which, if not known, leads to unnecessary complaints: The first wash must always be carried out at 60 degrees. The reason lies in the manufacturing technique.

Why premium Cotton Sateen shrinks in

Cotton Sateen bed linen from premium manufacturers is produced with a deliberate 'shrink-in' – this means the covers are made slightly oversized. Only through the first wash at 60 degrees does the fabric contract to its intended final size. Anyone who skips the first wash or washes too cold will have covers that seem too big for the duvet and pillow.

Important to know: This shrink-in rule applies exclusively to premium brands such as Schlossberg, Graser and comparable manufacturers. Fashion brands such as BOSS Home, JOOP! Living or Kenzo Maison, by contrast, make their Cotton Sateen bed linen with pre-washed fabrics – the shrink-in has already been completed here during production. With these brands, the first wash is not a technical necessity but merely a hygiene measure.

Size tolerance: the seven per cent allowance

Because of this manufacturing technique, small deviations from the stated sizes are completely normal. As an industry standard for premium bed linen, a tolerance of about seven per centapplies. Anything within this range is due to the manufacturing technique and not a defect. Only deviations beyond seven per cent would be a valid reason for complaint.

For a 135 x 200 cm standard size, this means: deviations of up to about 9 cm in length and 5 cm in width are within the usual range. That sounds like a lot, but in practice it is barely noticeable, because the bed linen sits wonderfully snugly when you pull it over the duvet.

What you should bear in mind for the first wash

• Always wash premium Cotton Sateen bed linen for the first time at 60 degrees
• Use liquid detergent without optical brighteners
• No fabric softener (it settles over the fibres and reduces moisture absorption)
• After the first wash, the final size is reached
• For subsequent washes, gentler care at 40 degrees is sufficient

For a long service life of your Cotton Sateen bed linen, a few basic care rules apply that go beyond the first wash.

Detergent and fabric softener

Use exclusively liquid detergent without optical brighteners. Optical brighteners settle into the fibres and, over time, alter the colour effect of the bed linen – a critical problem especially with colourful designs. With white Cotton Sateen bed linen, too, the original shade of white stays brilliant longer without optical brighteners. Do without fabric softener consistently: it settles as a film over the fibres and reduces the fabric's moisture absorption – precisely the property that makes Cotton Sateen so pleasant.

Drying and ironing

The tumble dryer is expressly recommended for high-quality cotton sateen bed linen. Through the gentle mechanical movement, the fibres of the threads settle back down and the bed linen regains its original softness and suppleness. Take care not to dry too hot – a low to medium dryer setting is enough. Alternatively, hang up the bed linen straight after washing to reduce creasing.

Cotton Sateen does not necessarily have to be ironed. If you want the full lustre, you can iron at a medium temperature with a little added steam.
