What is damask bedding?
Damask does not denote a fibre but a special weaving technique. Typical of damask is the woven-in pattern, which is created by the alternation of two types of weave within the same fabric – usually sateen weave and twill weave in different orientations.
This results in matte and slightly shiny areas in the fabric that become visible depending on the incidence of light – entirely without print or colour. The pattern is an integral part of the fabric and is retained even after many washes. Whereas with Satin bed linen the sheen is created from a uniform weave, damask thrives on the interplay between matte and shiny areas.
The history of damask – a fabric with tradition
The origin of damask lies in China. Via trade routes, the weaving technique reached India, Persia and Syria and finally, in the Middle Ages, Europe. The fabric became particularly well known through the city of Damascus, which gave damask its name.

Care of damask bedding
Damask bedding made of pure cotton is easy to care for. It can usually be washed at up to 60 °C – please refer to the care label for the exact recommendation. Damask is tumble-dryer safe but should not be fully over-dried, in order to protect the fibre.
Damask can be ironed without any problem and only reveals its full sheen after ironing – the matte and shiny areas then come into their own particularly well. Anyone who prefers it less smooth can also use damask un-ironed, but should then fold it carefully after drying.
Avoid fabric softener and detergents with optical brighteners. Both can damage the fibre over time and alter the colour. A high-quality liquid detergent is the better choice.
