Boxspring beds
A boxspring bed is not simply a bed with a high lying surface - it is a considered, multi-layered sleep system that, in the premium class, offers incomparable lying comfort. Anyone who has once slept on a high-quality boxspring bed knows the characteristic feeling: springy, at the same time supportive and with a pleasant entry height that makes getting up easier.
At Interior Couture you will find boxspring beds from four renowned premium manufacturers. As a boxspring bed is a special and long-term purchase, we recommend detailed advice. Our specialist adviser at the Düsseldorf bed house - which, like Interior Couture, is part of our company - is available to you for personal advice and a trial lie-down.
What is a box-spring bed?
A box-spring bed is a multi-layered sleep system without a slatted frame. Instead of the classic mattress on a slatted base, a box-spring bed consists of three layers coordinated with one another:
- Box (base suspension): a wooden frame with built-in spring cores – the 'box' that gives the bed its name
- Top mattress: usually a spring-core or pocket-spring mattress
- Topper: an additional layer for greater comfort and hygiene
This multi-layered construction creates a particularly springy sleeping sensation that industrially manufactured standard beds cannot match. In addition, the construction is open at the bottom, which promotes ideal air circulation and a healthy sleeping climate.
Advantages of a box-spring bed
- High entry height (50 to 80 cm): comfortable getting in and out, especially pleasant for older people or those with back problems
- Springy sleeping comfort: the multi-layered construction creates a uniquely soft yet supportive sleeping sensation
- Optimal air circulation: the open construction prevents moisture build-up and ensures a healthy sleeping climate
- Point-elastic support: modern spring-core systems support the body exactly where it is needed
- Prestigious design: the high sleeping height and elegant upholstery make the bed the central element of the bedroom
- Longevity: high-quality box-spring beds last for decades when cared for correctly
Brands at Interior Couture
In our range you will find box-spring beds from four premium workshops, each with its own profile and its own tradition.
Schramm Werkstätten – German workshop tradition
Schramm Werkstätten from Winnweiler in the Palatinate have been crafting sleep systems in traditional handwork for over 100 years. The famous Schramm Zwei Matratzen System offers exceptional pressure relief and supports the spine optimally. Each bed is tailored to individual needs in elaborate workshop craftsmanship – Made in Germany in the best sense.
Vispring – British box-spring pioneer
Vispring is regarded as the inventor of the modern luxurious box-spring bed. Since 1901 the British workshop has been crafting beds made exclusively from natural materials such as virgin wool, cotton, horsehair and cashmere. The special feature: Each spring is individually hand-sewn into cotton pockets – this ensures maximum point elasticity and a sleeping sensation that industrially manufactured box-spring beds simply cannot match.
Treca Paris – French elegance
Treca Paris combines French sense of style with innovative sleep technology. In the tradition-steeped Parisian workshops, box-spring beds are created with hand-tufted mattresses, fine fabrics and artful design details – ideal for discerning interiors in which the bed is both a design statement and a functional piece of furniture.
Birkenstock – ergonomic natural-materials specialist
Birkenstock transfers its decades of ergonomics expertise to the sleeping sphere. The box-spring beds impress with clean lines, honest natural materials and well-thought-out constructions that support the body optimally in every sleeping position. A modern interpretation of the box-spring bed with a timeless design language.
Which mattress for your box-spring bed?
The choice of top mattress decisively determines the sleeping sensation. Three mattress types are particularly widespread:
Pocket-spring mattress (barrel springs)
The premium variant: rounded springs in barrel form, sewn into individual fabric pockets. The high number of springs and the multiple support zones ensure a particularly high point elasticity and good pressure distribution. The result: each part of the body is supported individually, without neighbouring zones moving with it.
Pocket-spring mattress
The classic variant with slimmer steel springs, likewise embedded individually in fabric pockets. The compression springs support the body at the back, neck and hip and adapt to any body weight. The higher the number of springs, the higher the quality of the mattress.
Cold-foam mattress
An alternative for allergy sufferers: cold foam offers dust mites little to attack. The mattress adapts ergonomically to the body and retains warmth – ideal for people who get cold easily at night. Anyone who prefers a fibre solution instead of a spring core will find a good choice here.
At the premium workshops Schramm, Vispring and Treca, spring-core systems are traditionally used, often with special constructions such as the Schramm Zwei Matratzen System or the individually sewn-in springs by Vispring.
Topper – the extra touch of comfort
The topper is the uppermost layer of the box-spring bed and decisively determines the perceived sleeping sensation. Three topper materials are widespread:
- Viscose foam (memory foam): high point elasticity, pressure-relieving, adapts to the contour through body warmth. Also suitable for allergy sufferers.
- Cold foam: open-pored, breathable, very point-elastic. Ideal for people who sweat at night, and for allergy sufferers.
- Latex: environmentally friendly, made from rubber, high point elasticity, very breathable. Ideal for people who sweat heavily at night.
You will find all further topper variants under Topper – with detailed descriptions of material and sleeping sensation.
Adjustable box-spring beds with a motor
For even greater comfort, box-spring beds are also available with electric adjustment. By remote control, the head and foot sections can be brought steplessly into the desired position. Especially practical for anyone who likes to read or watch television in bed.
An important detail: with double beds, the individual sleeping surfaces can be adjusted independently of one another – each partner can choose their own favourite position without affecting the other.
Fabrics, leather and wood – individual design
Box-spring beds thrive on their upholstery – this makes them the design focal point of the bedroom. At the premium workshops you can choose from a large selection of materials.
Fabric covers
High-quality fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool, viscose or blended weaves – each with various textures such as velour, chenille or velvet. Depending on the model, the fabrics are fixed or partially removable.
Leather covers
Genuine buffalo leather or Scandinavian Elmo leather with a natural grain – the finest variant. Anyone who prefers a lower-maintenance alternative will also find high-quality faux leather as an option.
Wooden frame and feet
For the frame and feet, only woods from controlled cultivation are used: solid wood of oak, walnut, mahogany, beech, birch or cherry. Each type of wood has its own character and its own look.
Dressing a box-spring bed correctly
When dressing a box-spring bed there are a few particularities that the normal fitted sheet does not cover:
- Fabric-covered mattress + topper: Maxi fitted sheet up to 40 cm height
- Mattress only (without topper): Standard fitted sheet up to 25 to 30 cm height
- Topper only: Topper fitted sheet up to 10 cm height
For uncovered mattresses, the top mattress is dressed with a suitable box-spring fitted sheet. It is also possible to dress the top mattress and topper together under a single maxi fitted sheet.
When buying the fitted sheet, be sure to pay attention to the total height of your box-spring bed including the topper. A suitable selection in various heights is linked further below.
Sizes for box-spring beds
Box-spring beds are made in the classic bed dimensions:
- 90 × 200 cm: Single bed
- 100 × 200 cm: comfortable single bed
- 140 × 200 cm: standard double bed
- 160 × 200 cm: comfortable double bed
- 180 × 200 cm: generous double bed
- 200 × 200 cm and larger: premium dimensions, often as two individual box elements
For sizes from 180 × 200 cm, the box-spring bed often consists of two individual elements, which offers the great advantage: Each partner can choose an individual firmness grade. Special sizes are also possible at all the premium workshops.

Frequently Asked Questions about box-spring beds
What is a box-spring bed?
A box-spring bed is a multi-layered sleep system without a slatted frame. It consists of three layers: a box (base suspension with spring cores), a top mattress (usually spring-core or barrel pocket-spring) and a topper for additional comfort. The construction creates a particularly springy sleeping sensation and has a pleasantly high entry height of 50 to 80 cm.
Which mattress is best for a box-spring bed?
Barrel pocket-spring mattresses are the premium choice: the rounded springs in barrel form ensure high point elasticity and good pressure distribution. Classic pocket-spring mattresses are likewise a good choice with a slightly different spring form. Cold-foam mattresses are an alternative for allergy sufferers. At the premium workshops, special spring systems are often used, such as the Schramm Zwei Matratzen System or the individually sewn-in springs by Vispring.
Which topper suits which type of sleeper?
Viscose-foam toppers are pressure-relieving and adapt individually through body warmth – ideal for changing sleeping positions. Cold-foam toppers are breathable and ideal for people who sweat at night. Latex toppers are particularly point-elastic and breathable – ideal for those who sweat and for environmentally conscious buyers. You will also find detailed advice on this with our toppers.
How high is a box-spring bed?
Box-spring beds have a total height of about 50 to 80 cm – considerably higher than classic beds with a slatted frame. This high entry height makes getting in and out particularly pleasant and is an advantage for older people or those with back problems. When buying fitted sheets, pay attention to the total height including the topper.
Which fitted sheet do I need?
That depends on what you want to dress: for mattress plus topper you need a maxi fitted sheet up to 40 cm height. For the mattress alone, a standard fitted sheet up to 25 to 30 cm is sufficient. For the topper alone there are special topper fitted sheets up to 10 cm. You will find a suitable selection with our fitted sheets.
Which brands of box-spring bed do you carry?
In our range you will find box-spring beds from Schramm Werkstätten (German workshop tradition), Vispring (British box-spring pioneer since 1901), Treca Paris (French elegance) and Birkenstock (ergonomic natural-materials specialist). At the Düsseldorf Bettenhaus, our sister company, you will additionally find further brands to try out lying down.
Can I try lying down before buying?
