Bedspread or throw – what is the difference?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but in practice they mean different things:
- Bedspread: a generously dimensioned cover that completely covers the bed during the day – usually with an overhang at the sides and the foot end
- Throw: a more compact blanket, often with fringes or borders, used as a sofa throw, cuddle blanket or decorative element

Materials – the diversity of the bedspread

The right size depends on what you would like to use the bedspread for.
As a bed throw
Here the bedspread should completely cover the bed – including an overhang at the sides and the foot end. Take your guidance from your mattress width:
- Single bed (90 or 100 cm): bedspread about 180 × 240 cm
- Double bed (140 or 160 cm): bedspread about 220 × 240 cm or 240 × 260 cm
- Large double bed (180 or 200 cm): bedspread about 260 × 280 cm or larger
For especially elegant looks, we recommend generous dimensions that fully frame the bed at the head and foot as well.
As a throw for the sofa and living room
Here more compact sizes are usual, mostly between 130 × 170 cm and 150 × 200 cm. A throw should be able to be laid comfortably over the shoulders or fall decoratively over the arm of the sofa.

- Air wool blankets regularly, in the open air, without direct sunlight
- Wash cashmere and alpaca gently with a down detergent or wool detergent, only when needed
- Faux-fur blankets: dry cleaning usually recommended
- Blankets of cotton and piqué are often machine-washable – observe the care label
- no fabric softener – it reduces breathability and damages natural fibres
- do not dry natural-fibre blankets directly on the radiator

Can I wash a bedspread?
That depends on the material. Blankets of cotton and piqué are often machine-washable. Wool, cashmere and alpaca should only be washed gently with a wool detergent – ideally by hand or on the wool programme. For faux fur and particularly valuable natural fibres, we recommend professional cleaning. Be sure to observe the care label.
