Fitted sheets are the basis of every well-made bed. They lie directly on the mattress, ensure a smooth, crease-free lying surface and protect the mattress from soiling. What sets a high-quality fitted sheet apart?

In contrast to classic bed sheets without elastic, fitted sheets have an all-round elastic that tensions the sheet securely around the mattress. The quality is determined in several respects:

Which size do I need? – standard sizes and special sizes

Fitted sheets are available in numerous standard sizes. The most important:

• 90 x 200 cm and 100 x 200 cm – single bed
• 120 x 200 cm – narrow double bed
• 140 x 200 cm – standard single bed
• 160 x 200 cm and 180 x 200 cm – double bed
• 200 x 200 cm and 200 x 220 cm – large double bed

Wall height and mattress type – what you should look out for

The wall height indicates how high a mattress the fitted sheet encloses. The right wall height ensures that the sheet sits crease-free and does not slip.

• Standard mattresses: wall height 25 to 30 cm
• Toppers: wall height 5 to 12 cm – need special topper fitted sheets
• Boxspring beds: wall height 35 to 40 cm – need fitted sheets with a high wall
• Double layer (mattress plus topper): wall height 35 to 45 cm – best clarified with the brand

Care of fitted sheets

The right care depends on the material:

• Cotton materials (jersey, satin, percale, terry): washable at 60 °C, tumble-dryer suitable
• Linen and half-linen: washable at 60 °C, better to air-dry
• Silk: delicate wash at 30 °C, not in the tumble dryer, mild silk detergent

For all materials the same applies: do without fabric softener and detergents with optical brighteners. Both can damage the fibre over time and alter the colour. A high-quality liquid detergent is the better choice.
