What are jersey fitted sheets?

Jersey is not a woven fabric but a knitted one. Unlike classic woven goods such as sateen fitted sheets or percale, jersey is created by interlooping individual threads into stitches – similar to a knitted cardigan. Small pockets of air form between the stitches, which can be stretched by pulling them apart.

It is precisely this property that makes jersey fitted sheets so popular: they are naturally elastic – entirely without any elastane content. While many inexpensive manufacturers work with elastane admixtures, high-quality jersey fitted sheets often manage with pure cotton jersey. Here the elasticity arises purely from the type of knit.

Unlike with woven fabrics, jersey springs back into its original shape after stretching. This keeps the fitted sheet crease-free and taut across the mattress – even after a restless night.

Jersey fitted sheets in all sizes

When choosing the right jersey fitted sheet, it is not only the base area that matters but also the mattress height . Jersey is indeed elastic, but depending on the firmness of the material the leeway generally amounts to only a few centimetres.

Single bed

The most common sizes for single beds are 90 × 200 cm and 100 × 200 cm. Alongside these, 120 × 200 cm and 140 × 200 cm are also frequently requested – for example, for French beds or wider single beds.

Double bed

German double beds generally start at 160 × 200 cm. The sizes 180 × 200 cm and 200 × 200 cm are especially popular. Since mattresses should be matched to the individual sleeper, double beds often consist of two single mattresses – so you can freely choose whether to dress each mattress individually or use one continuous fitted sheet across the full width.

For particularly tall people or an even more comfortable bed, beds in extra length, such as 200 × 220 cm, have now also become established.

Jersey fitted sheets for boxspring beds

Compared with classic beds, boxspring beds have considerably higher mattresses and are often fitted with an additional topper. This quickly adds up to a total height of up to 40 cm.

When choosing the right jersey fitted sheet for a boxspring bed, you should therefore be sure to ensure that it is suitable for high mattresses. Jersey fitted sheets for toppers

A cosy topper on the mattress offers additional sleeping comfort. Since the average topper height, at 5 to 12 cm, is considerably lower than that of a standard mattress, regular fitted sheets do not provide a good fit. In addition, the topper is usually softer and less dimensionally stable than a mattress.

Care of jersey fitted sheets

Jersey fitted sheets made of 100% cotton are particularly easy-care. They can be washed at up to 60 °C – that is enough to reliably remove bacteria and mites. Drying in the tumble dryer is possible, but to protect the fibres the fitted sheet should not be dried out completely.

Thanks to the elastic stitch structure, jersey is generally non-iron. Anyone who dries the fitted sheet properly in the tumble dryer after washing and then promptly pulls it onto the mattress can save themselves the ironing.

Do without fabric softener and detergents containing optical brighteners – both can damage the fibre over time and alter the colour. A high-quality liquid detergent is the better choice.
