What are sateen fitted sheets?

Sateen does not denote a fibre but a particular weave - the so-called sateen weave. In it, the threads lie especially densely and evenly at the surface, giving the fabric its typically smooth, slightly lustrous structure. In contrast to Jersey Fitted Sheet, which are elastic thanks to their knitted structure, sateen fitted sheets are not stretchy - the fit must therefore come from the correct size.

High-quality sateen fitted sheets are made from long-staple cotton. The fine yarns make the fabric especially smooth and long-lasting. Anyone who wants the refined feel of sateen bed linen in their fitted sheet too is well advised to choose sateen fitted sheets.

Important to know: first wash and size tolerance

With sateen fitted sheets from premium manufacturers there is a particular feature that surprises many customers: The first wash must be carried out at 60 °C.

The reason lies in the manufacturing technique. Sateen fitted sheets from premium makers are produced with a deliberate shrinkage allowance produced. That means they are made slightly oversized. Only through the first wash at 60 °C does the weave draw together to its intended final size. Anyone who skips the first wash or washes too cold has a fitted sheet that seems too large for the mattress.

Important to know: this shrinkage-allowance rule applies to premium brands such as Schlossberg, Graser, Curt Bauer and Royfort. Fashion brands such as Boss Home, by contrast, work with pre-washed fabrics - here the shrinkage has already taken place during production.

Owing to this manufacturing technique, small size deviations are entirely normal. The industry standard for premium bed linen is a tolerance of about seven per cent. Anything within this range is due to the manufacturing process and is not a defect. Only deviations beyond seven per cent would be a legitimate grounds for complaint.

Sateen fitted sheets in all sizes

Since sateen, unlike jersey, is not elastic, choosing the right size is especially important. Pay attention not only to the base area but also to the mattress height.

Single bed

Classic sizes for single beds are 90 × 200 cm and 100 × 200 cm. If you prefer more comfort, choose 120 × 200 cm or 140 × 200 cm.

Double bed

Common in the German bedroom are 160 × 200 cm, 180 × 200 cm or 200 × 200 cm. As double beds often consist of two single mattresses, you can choose whether to dress each mattress individually or use one continuous fitted sheet across the full width. Extra lengths such as 200 × 220 cm or 200 × 240 cm are also available from many brands or possible as a bespoke order.

Sateen fitted sheets for boxspring beds

Boxspring beds have a noticeably higher mattress build-up than classic beds. Heights of 35 to 40 cm often come together. Since sateen is not elastic, you should be sure to check that the fitted sheet is also suitable for tall mattresses.

Sateen fitted sheets for toppers

Toppers are soft overlays that create additional sleeping comfort on the mattress. Caring for sateen fitted sheets

Sateen fitted sheets in 100% cotton are long-lasting and colour-stable - provided you observe a few care notes:

• first wash at 60 °C (mandatory for premium brands, see above)
• subsequent washing at 40 to 60 °C possible
• use a liquid detergent without optical brighteners
• no fabric softener - it settles as a film over the fibres and reduces moisture absorption
• tumble-dryer suitable at a low to medium setting

The tumble dryer is actually recommended for high-quality cotton sateen fitted sheets. Through the gentle mechanical movement the fibres settle back down, and the fabric regains its original suppleness.

Ironing is optional. Anyone who wants the full sheen and a particularly smooth surface can iron at medium temperature with a little added steam. For everyday use, however, simply fitting it directly after drying is enough.
