Pillows
A high-quality pillow is more than a nice accessory – it determines the resting position of your head, the support of your cervical spine and thus the quality of your sleep. With an average of around 2,500 hours of contact per year, the right pillow is a genuine investment in your health.
At Interior Couture you will find pillows from some of the most renowned European manufacturers – complemented by special ergonomic solutions for specific needs. As choosing the right pillow is an individual matter, we are happy to advise you personally. You can reach us by telephone on +49 (0) 221 630 606 12.
Which pillow suits your sleeping position?
The most important question when choosing a pillow is not the material – but your preferred sleeping position. It determines the height, firmness and shape of the ideal pillow.
- Side sleepers need a higher, firmer pillow that optimally fills the space between shoulder and head – ideal are neck-support pillows, firmer down pillows or special ergonomic side-sleeper pillows such as the Birkenstock pillow with a subtle L-shape
- Back sleepers benefit from medium support – the pillow should gently support the head and neck without overextending the cervical spine
- Front sleepers choose very flat, soft pillows that prevent an unnatural curvature of the neck
- Combination sleepers need adjustable pillows with a variable fill quantity when they switch between positions
Those who frequently experience neck tension when changing sleeping position should pay particular attention to an ergonomic pillow shape. Specially developed neck-support pillows with memory foam or an ergonomic shape support the cervical spine and reduce tension.
Fillings for pillows
Besides sleeping position and support, the filling is the second central factor.
Down pillows – the classic premium comfort
Down pillows are gentle, snug and temperature-balancing. They adapt to the shape of the head and are ideal for anyone who appreciates the classic softness of a high-quality hotel pillow. With down pillows, the fill quantity determines the firmness – more down means firmer support.
Eiderdown pillows – the most exclusive version
Eiderdown pillows are the most precious pillows on the market. Eiderdown is hand-gathered exclusively from the abandoned nests of wild eider ducks in Iceland. The unique interlocking structure of the down makes the pillow exceptionally light and supportive at the same time – a sleeping sensation that no other filling offers in this form.
Fibre pillows – ideal for allergy sufferers
Allergy-sufferer pillows with a synthetic fibre filling are easy to care for, hygienic and washable at 60 °C. This makes them the only reliable choice for house-dust allergy sufferers who need to wash regularly to kill mites. Modern hollow-fibre fillings offer a pleasant feel that is barely inferior to down pillows in comfort.
Neck-support pillows and ergonomic specialists
Neck-support pillows are not classic pillows but ergonomically shaped support pillows – usually with memory foam or a latex core. They are the right choice for people with neck tension, disc problems or generally high demands on sleep ergonomics. Side sleepers, too, often benefit from the targeted support of the cervical spine.
A special form within the ergonomic pillows is the Birkenstock side-sleeper pillow with a subtle L-shape. It is developed specifically for side sleepers: the L-shape fills the space between shoulder and head in a way that classic pillows cannot achieve. The result is a natural resting position for the neck and shoulder.
Support levels for every need
High-quality pillows are mostly offered in different support levels:
- Soft: gently yielding – ideal for front sleepers and anyone who prefers a cosy feel
- Medium: the balanced classic – for back sleepers and versatile sleeping positions
- Firm: targeted neck support – for side sleepers and people with neck problems
- Adjustable: variable fill quantities or modular systems – flexible for changing sleeping habits

Royfort complements the range with modern down pillows made from the brand's characteristic cashmere cotton. A good choice for customers who wish to combine premium quality with modern, minimalist design.
Birkenstock brings an ergonomic speciality to the range with its characteristic side-sleeper pillow in a subtle L-shape. The pillow is developed specifically for the needs of side sleepers and fills the space between shoulder and head in a special way.
The fashion brand BOSS Home brings modern design and luxurious comfort in its own pillow line – mostly with subtle, elegant brand elements.
Materials of the tickings
The ticking is the fabric casing that surrounds the filling of the pillow. It determines the sleep climate, the feather-proofness and the durability. High-quality pillows have tickings made of:
- Cotton batiste: particularly finely woven, breathable and feather-proof
- Cotton percale: densely woven, robust and durable
- finest cotton: the classic for a healthy sleep climate
With premium manufacturers, the ticking is chosen just as carefully as the filling itself – an important quality feature by which high-quality pillows can be recognised.
Care of your pillows
The correct care depends on the filling and ticking:
- Down pillows and eiderdown pillows: shake up regularly, air well, professional cleaning when needed
- Fibre pillows: washable at 40 to 60 °C, quick-drying and shape-retaining – ideal for allergy sufferers
- Neck-support pillows and ergonomic pillows: covers are usually removable and washable; the core should be aired regularly but not washed
Avoid fabric softener and detergents with optical brighteners in general – both can damage the filling or reduce breathability.
Pillow sizes
The most common pillow sizes in Germany:
- 40 × 80 cm: the German standard size – narrow and designed for one person
- 80 × 80 cm: the large, classic pillow – formerly standard, less common today
- 50 × 70 cm: international standard size, often found with hotel and designer brands
Which size is right for you depends on your bed set-up and personal preference. In combination with the matching bed linen, both sizes should be coordinated.
When should you replace your pillow?
Even high-quality pillows lose their shape and support over time. As a rule of thumb:
- Down pillows: every 5 to 10 years
- Eiderdown pillows: with good care often 10 years and longer
- Fibre pillows: every 2 to 4 years
- Neck-support pillows and ergonomic pillows: depending on the manufacturer, every 3 to 5 years
A simple test: fold your pillow in the middle and press the air out. If it no longer unfolds on its own, it is time for a new pillow.
Matching bedding essentials to go with your pillow
Those who wish to complete their sleeping set-up will also find high-quality Duvets in all materials as well as matching Bed Linen, Fitted Sheets and Mattress protectors.

Frequently asked questions about pillows
Which pillow is the right one for me?
That depends on your preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers choose firmer, higher pillows or a neck-support pillow. Back sleepers benefit from medium support. Front sleepers need soft, flat models. Those who sleep flexibly choose adjustable pillows with a variable fill quantity. If in doubt, we are happy to advise you personally.
What is the difference between down and eiderdown?
Down is the fine underlayer of plumage from waterfowl such as geese or ducks – a premium material with classic softness against the skin. Eiderdown is the most precious variant: it comes from wild eider ducks in Iceland and is hand-gathered from abandoned nests. Eiderdown is exceptionally light and supportive at the same time – the most exclusive variant.
Which pillow is suitable for allergy sufferers?
Fibre pillows are the only reliable choice for allergy sufferers. They can be washed at 60 °C, which kills dust mites, making them permanently hygienic. Down pillows cannot be washed regularly enough to guarantee protection for allergy sufferers. You can find out more in our allergy-friendly pillows.
How often should I replace my pillow?
Fibre pillows every 2 to 4 years, down pillows every 5 to 10 years, eiderdown pillows often 10 years and longer. Orthopaedic neck support pillows last 3 to 5 years depending on the material. A simple test: if the pillow no longer unfolds by itself after being folded and pressed together, it is time for a new one.
Which filling is the most luxurious?
Eiderdown is regarded as the most exclusive filling. It is exceptionally light, soft against the skin and supportive at the same time – qualities that no other material offers in this combination. Classic down is the premium standard, offering the best balance between comfort and affordability.
What is an orthopaedic neck support pillow?
An orthopaedic neck support pillow is ergonomically shaped – usually with memory foam or a latex core – and provides targeted support for the cervical spine. It is the right choice for people with neck tension, slipped disc problems or generally high demands on sleep ergonomics. Many side sleepers also benefit from the targeted support.
What is special about the Birkenstock side sleeper pillow?
The Birkenstock side sleeper pillow has a subtle L shape and is specially developed for the needs of side sleepers. The L shape fills the space between shoulder and head in a way that classic pillows cannot achieve. The result is a natural resting position for the neck and shoulder – ideal for side sleepers who demand ergonomic comfort.
