What makes eiderdown so special?

Eiderdown is obtained exclusively from the wild eider duck, which is native to the cold waters of Iceland, Greenland and Scandinavia. About 75% of the world's eiderdown comes from Iceland, where the tradition of down harvesting has been practised for centuries.

What makes eiderdown unique is the way it is obtained: the down is not taken from the animalsbut hand-collected from the abandoned nests after the eider ducks have finished raising their brood. The eider duck uses its own breast plumage as thermal insulation for the eggs – and it is precisely this excellent down that gives eiderdown pillows their special property.

The yield is extremely small: only about 15 to 20 grams of cleaned down is obtained per nest. This makes eiderdown one of the rarest and most precious natural materials of all.

Properties of an eiderdown pillow

Eiderdown differs from ordinary down through a unique gripping structure: the fine branchings of the down hook into one another like a hook-and-loop fastener and thus form an exceptionally compact yet feather-light layer. This property provides particular advantages:

Why fill power counts for less here

With classic down pillows, the fill power (or loft) is an important quality indicator – the higher the fill power, the better the thermal insulation. With eiderdown it works differently: the warming effect arises not from the volume of the risen down but from the finely branched gripping structure. Even with a small amount of filling, an exceptionally well-insulating layer is created.

This means: an eiderdown pillow can feel considerably lighter than a classic down pillow and nonetheless offer more warmth and support. Assessment by fill power alone falls short with eiderdown.

Which firmness grade for which sleeping position?

With eiderdown pillows too, the sleeping position determines the right firmness grade and the appropriate amount of filling:

• Front sleepers: soft pillows with a small amount of filling – prevent overextension of the cervical spine
• Back sleepers: medium-firm pillows with a moderate amount of filling – support the head and neck in a natural position
• Side sleepers: firmer pillows with a higher amount of filling – compensate for the distance between shoulder and head
