Neck support
An orthopaedic support pillow relieves the cervical spine and can help to prevent tension, neck and back pain. Unlike a classic pillow, it is ergonomically shaped and provides targeted support to the areas that are often overloaded at night.
At Interior Couture you will find high-quality orthopaedic support pillows from selected premium manufacturers. As the choice of the right pillow is individual and depends strongly on your sleeping position, we are happy to advise you personally – by telephone on +49 (0) 221 630 606 12 or by email at info@waesche-kultur.de.
What is an orthopaedic support pillow?
In contrast to a classic down pillow an orthopaedic support pillow is not a yielding cushion but an ergonomically shaped support pillow with a special core. The shape is designed to hold the head in a natural, straight position while at the same time relieving the cervical spine.
This makes the orthopaedic support pillow the right choice for anyone with neck and shoulder muscles strained by everyday life or their sleeping position. While a classic pillow offers comfort and a cosy fit, the orthopaedic support pillow focuses on a therapeutically sensible positioning.
When is an orthopaedic support pillow worthwhile?
An orthopaedic support pillow is particularly recommended for:
- people with frequent tension in the neck and shoulder area
- people with chronic back pain
- sleepers who regularly wake up in the morning with neck pain
- side sleepers who need to compensate for the height difference between shoulder and head
- anyone with high demands on sleep ergonomics
Anyone who has been using classic down pillows and sleeps well with them does not necessarily need an orthopaedic support pillow. But as soon as tension or pain comes into play, the switch is worthwhile.
Which orthopaedic support pillow for which type of sleeper?
The right sleeping position determines which orthopaedic support pillow suits you.
Side sleepers
Side sleepers benefit most from an orthopaedic support pillow. The distance between shoulder and head must be compensated for so that the cervical spine forms a straight line with the rest of the spine. Firmer pillows or height-adjustable models are suitable here.
Back sleepers
Back sleepers need a pillow with a medium height and a targeted neck curve. The cervical spine should not be overextended – support that is too high would be counterproductive. Classic ergonomic orthopaedic support pillows with a wave shape are ideal here.
Front sleepers
Front sleepers have a harder time with orthopaedic support pillows, because most ergonomic shapes are too high for lying on the stomach. Front sleepers therefore usually choose very flat, soft pillows or do without a support pillow altogether.
Combination sleepers
Anyone who switches between different sleeping positions needs a pillow with adjustable height or a flexible shape that adapts to the respective position. Some manufacturers offer modular systems with removable layers for this purpose.
What fillings are there?
The core of an orthopaedic support pillow determines the feel and the supporting power. The most common materials:
Viscose foam (memory foam)
Viscose foam, also known as memory foam, adapts precisely to your shape through body heat and pressure and then retains this exact position – the so-called memory effect. This pinpoint support makes memory foam the most popular variant for ergonomic orthopaedic support pillows. Advantage: even with movement during the night, the foam returns to its original shape.
Soft latex core
A soft latex core combines natural latex and synthetic latex and thus unites the advantages of both materials: high point elasticity, good breathability and a particularly long service life. Latex cores retain warmth well and are therefore particularly suitable for people with a higher need for warmth.
Down filling with an ergonomic construction
Some premium manufacturers offer orthopaedic support pillows with a specially engineered down filling – usually with chambers of varying fill quantity that create ergonomic support zones. This variant is the bridge between classic pillow comfort and ergonomic neck support.
Brands at Interior Couture
In our range you will find orthopaedic support pillows from three renowned manufacturers.
Billerbeck has specialised in high-quality bedding for over 100 years and is one of the leading providers in the orthopaedic support pillow sector. The German manufacturer develops sleep technology with medically thought-out concepts and is particularly broadly positioned in the orthopaedic support pillow area – there is a suitable model for every sleeping habit and preference.
Dauny from Switzerland has specialised in high-quality bedding since 1921. All products carry the label 'Made in Switzerland' and are manufactured with the utmost care from the finest materials. For discerning sleepers who value Swiss manufacturing quality in their sleep ergonomics too.
Schlossberg, the Swiss premium specialist, complements the orthopaedic support pillow range with high-quality models in the finishing quality typical of the brand – ideal for anyone who wishes to keep their sleep set-up consistent by brand.
Caring for orthopaedic support pillows
The care differs from that of classic pillows, because the ergonomic core is not freely washable:
- the cover is usually removable and, depending on the model, washable at 30 to 90 °C
- the core should be aired regularly, but not washed
- protect from moisture – foam cores are sensitive to water
- do not put in the tumble dryer
- avoid direct sunlight
Always follow the care instructions on the label of the respective model. In the case of heavier soiling of the core, professional cleaning may be advisable. Orthopaedic support pillows with an additional inner cover, which can be washed separately when needed, are practical.
Sizes for orthopaedic support pillows
The German standard size for orthopaedic support pillows is 40 × 80 cm. The rectangular shape offers ergonomic advantages and ample space to support the cervical spine and relieve the back.
Some ergonomic models deviate from the standard format and have special shapes such as waves, curved contours or butterfly shapes. For these special shapes, the size is stated in the respective product details. If you are unsure which format suits your bed and your bed linen, we are happy to advise you.
Matching bed set-up around your orthopaedic support pillow
An orthopaedic support pillow reaches its full effect in combination with a good duvet and matching Bed Linen. Anyone who wishes to complete their sleep system will also find high-quality Fitted Sheet and Mattress Protectors.

Frequently Asked Questions about orthopaedic support pillows
When is an orthopaedic support pillow worthwhile?
An orthopaedic support pillow is particularly recommended for frequent tension in the neck and shoulder area, chronic back pain, or if you regularly wake up with neck pain. Side sleepers also benefit from the targeted support. Anyone who sleeps well with a classic pillow and has no complaints does not necessarily need an orthopaedic support pillow.
What is the difference between memory foam and soft latex?
Memory foam (viscose foam) adapts through body heat and then retains the individual shape – this is the most pinpoint support. Soft latex is more elastic and has better breathability, but retains more warmth. Memory foam is the classic choice for tension, soft latex is more for people with a higher need for warmth.
Which orthopaedic support pillow suits my sleeping position?
Side sleepers need firmer, higher pillows that compensate for the distance between shoulder and head. Back sleepers choose medium-high pillows with a targeted neck curve. Front sleepers cope less well with orthopaedic support pillows and usually need very flat, soft models. For changing positions, adjustable pillows with variable height are recommended.
Can I wash an orthopaedic support pillow?
The cover is usually removable and washable at 30 to 90 °C – please refer to the care label for the exact temperature. The core should not be washed, as memory foam and latex are sensitive to water. Instead, air the core regularly and protect it from moisture.
How long does it take to get used to an orthopaedic support pillow?
The adjustment can take up to two or three weeks. In the first few nights, the pillow may feel unfamiliarly firm or simply different. Give yourself and your cervical spine time to get used to the new lying position. If complaints persist after three weeks, the supporting power is probably not right – in which case a further consultation is worthwhile.
How often should I replace my orthopaedic support pillow?
Orthopaedic support pillows last around 3 to 5 years, depending on the material and manufacturer. Over time, the core loses supporting power and can no longer fulfil its ergonomic function optimally. A simple test: if the pillow is visibly deformed or no longer returns to its original shape, it is time for a new one.
Which brands of orthopaedic support pillow do you carry?
In our range you will find orthopaedic support pillows from Billerbeck (German market leader with a broad selection), Dauny (Swiss premium manufacturer) and Schlossberg (Swiss bed linen specialist). This means we cover the premium segment of orthopaedic support pillows.
