Topper
A topper is the uppermost layer of a well-considered sleep system – an overlay that lies directly on the mattress and decisively shapes the feel of lying down. Whether you want to upgrade an existing mattress, complete the comfort of a boxspring bed or simply wish for more hygiene and a more pleasant sleeping sensation: the right topper is a small investment with a big effect.
At Interior Couture you will find toppers from four renowned premium manufacturers. When choosing the right topper, material, firmness and height all play a role – we are happy to advise you personally. You can reach us by telephone on +49 (0) 221 630 606 12 or at the Düsseldorf bed house, our sister company (Bahnstraße 16, 40212 Düsseldorf).
What is a topper and what is it for?
A topper is an additional overlay, usually 5 to 10 cm thick, that is placed on top of the actual mattress. It is not strictly necessary, but offers several practical advantages:
- improved lying comfort: the topper alters the uppermost layer and makes the sleep system softer or more supple
- protection of the mattress: the topper absorbs much of the daily strain and extends the lifespan of the mattress
- better hygiene: the topper is usually removable and the cover washable
- uniform lying comfort in double beds: a continuous topper connector bridges the gap between two single mattresses
- precise adjustment: the feel of lying down can be precisely tuned via the topper material and the firmness grade
- upgrading existing mattresses: even older mattresses can be made considerably more comfortable with a good topper
With boxspring beds the topper is even an integral part of the system – without it the bed is not complete. With classic mattresses on a slatted base, the topper is a comfort addition that many sleepers would no longer want to be without.
Which topper is the right one for you?
The choice of topper material depends on your personal preferences and physical needs. Three materials are particularly common, each with its own strengths.
Viscose foam (memory foam)
Viscose foam, also known as memory foam, is the material with the characteristic memory effect: through body heat and pressure the foam adapts precisely to your shape and then retains this tailored position. The result is an exceptionally pinpoint pressure relief – ideal for tension or sensitive pressure points.
Suitable for:
- people with tension, back problems or shoulder problems
- sleepers who prefer a slightly warming feel
- house dust allergy sufferers – viscose foam offers dust mites little breeding ground
- anyone seeking pinpoint pressure relief
Cold foam
The cold foam topper has an open-pored structure that ensures very good air regulation and moisture regulation. No heat build-up occurs – you lie warm without sweating. Compared with viscose foam, cold foam reacts more quickly, so it is less contouring and more directly elastic.
Suitable for:
- sleepers with a normal to slightly increased need for warmth
- anyone who prefers a surface-elastic feel
- allergy sufferers
- Buyers who value good breathability
Latex
The latex topper made from natural rubber is environmentally friendly, highly point-elastic and at the same time dimensionally stable. Thanks to the characteristic perforated structure of the latex, it offers particularly good air circulation. Latex is also the most durable of the three materials.
Suitable for:
- Sleepers who sweat heavily at night
- environmentally conscious buyers who value natural materials
- House dust allergy sufferers
- anyone looking for a particularly durable topper
Comparison of the three topper materials
- Viscose foam: precise contouring thanks to the memory effect, gently warming, ideal for tension
- Cold foam: surface-elastic, breathable, a good middle ground between warmth and climate regulation
- Latex: durable, highly point-elastic, ideal for those who sweat, an ecological natural product
Which material suits you depends on your warmth requirements, sleeping position and personal lying feel. At the Düsseldorfer Bettenhaus you have the opportunity to compare all three materials directly – this is the most reliable way to make the right choice.

What height should a topper be?
Toppers are offered in various heights. Depending on the model and material, they range between 4 and 10 cm:
- 4 to 5 cm: a subtle comfort improvement, a barely visible difference in height
- 6 to 8 cm: the most common height – a good compromise between comfort and handling
- 9 to 10 cm: a marked increase in comfort, often standard with boxspring beds
Important when buying a topper: the total height of your bed changes with the topper. When buying fitted sheets, pay attention to the total height of your bed including the topper. For the most common configuration (mattress plus topper) you will usually need a maxi fitted sheet up to 40 cm high.
Topper Connector for double beds
With double beds that have two mattresses lying side by side, a small gap appears in the middle. A Topper Connector is a continuous topper that is laid over both sleeping surfaces and evens out this gap both visually and to the touch. This way you get individual firmness grades for each partner and at the same time a continuous lying feel without a disturbing central seam.
This solution is particularly popular with premium double beds because it combines the best of both worlds: individual configuration and uniform sleeping comfort.
Toppers for every size
We stock toppers in all common sizes, from the single bed to the large double bed.
Single bed
- 90 × 200 cm: German standard size
- 100 × 200 cm: a comfortable single bed
- 120 × 200 cm and 140 × 200 cm: generous single mattresses or a small double bed
Double bed
- 160 × 200 cm: entry-level size for double beds
- 180 × 200 cm: the classic double-bed dimension
- 200 × 200 cm and 200 × 220 cm: premium dimensions, often as a continuous Topper Connector
Special sizes and individual configurations are available from the premium manufactories on request – please do get in touch with us.
Caring for your topper
- air it regularly, ideally every morning
- remove the cover when needed and wash it according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually at 40 to 60 °C
- no fabric softener – it reduces breathability
- do not wash the topper core – foam materials are sensitive to water
- protect it from direct sunlight
- turn or rotate it regularly, provided the manufacturer recommends it
With good care, high-quality toppers last 5 to 10 years. This makes the topper less durable than the mattress itself, but it takes on the majority of the daily strain – and thereby protects your more valuable mattress.
Matching bed accessories to go with your topper
A topper is the final layer of a well-thought-out sleep system. To go with it, you will find high-quality mattresses, precisely fitting fitted sheets in all heights, exquisite Bed Linen, Duvets, ergonomically designed pillows and protective Mattress protectors.

Frequently asked questions about toppers
What is a topper?
A topper is an additional overlay, 4 to 10 cm thick, that is placed on top of the actual mattress. It improves the lying feel, protects the mattress and provides greater hygiene. With boxspring beds the topper is an integral part of the system, while with classic mattresses on a slatted frame it is a comfort addition.
Which topper material is right for me?
Viscose foam (memory foam) is ideal for tension and for a gently warming, snug lying feel. Cold foam is breathable and suits a surface-elastic, climatically balanced sleeping feel. Latex is the most durable option, ideal for those who sweat and for environmentally conscious buyers. Which material suits you is a very individual question – it is best decided during a trial lie-down.
What is a Topper Connector?
With double beds that have two mattresses lying side by side, a gap appears in the middle. A Topper Connector is a continuous topper that is laid over both sleeping surfaces and evens out this gap both visually and to the touch. This creates individual firmness grades for each partner and at the same time a continuous lying feel.
Do I need a special fitted sheet for my topper?
That depends on whether you cover the mattress and topper together or the topper separately. For the mattress plus topper you will usually need a maxi fitted sheet up to 40 cm high. For the topper alone there are special topper fitted sheets up to 10 cm. When buying, pay attention to the total height of your bed.
Can I wash the topper?
The cover is usually removable and washable at 40 to 60 °C depending on the manufacturer. You should not wash the foam core itself, as foam materials are sensitive to water. Always follow the care label of the respective model.
How long does a topper last?
High-quality toppers last 5 to 10 years with good care. This makes them less durable than the mattress itself – but that is precisely their strength: the topper absorbs a large part of the daily strain and thus extends the lifespan of the more valuable mattress.
Are toppers suitable for allergy sufferers?
Yes, all three main materials are suitable for allergy sufferers. Viscose foam, cold foam and natural latex offer dust mites hardly any breeding ground. The washable cover, which is cleaned regularly at at least 60 °C, is also important.
Which topper brands do you stock?
In our range you will find toppers from Schramm Werkstätten, Vispring, Treca Paris and Birkenstock. At the Düsseldorfer Bettenhaus, our sister company, you will also find further brands to try out.
