Damask or satin – two qualities for different occasions

Damask Table Linen

Damask is the regal weaving technique among table linen materials. The patterns are not printed on but woven directly in – an elaborate interplay of warp and weft threads creates a three-dimensional, almost sculptural surface. A special feature of damask: the look is reversible. On one side the pattern appears matt, on the other glossy – both are fully-fledged display sides. Damask tablecloths retain their striking presence for decades and are the classic choice for festive occasions, prestigious table settings and heirlooms.

Mako Satin Table Linen

Mako satin is the more elegant, more everyday-friendly sister of damask. The fabric, made of mercerised Mako cotton, has a characteristically delicate shimmering sheen, which lends even a simple design a festive note. This makes satin the right choice when you are looking for a tablecloth that feels at home both in daily use and at family celebrations – without appearing too formal.

Fabric Napkins – the forgotten premium detail

A good tablecloth only truly comes into its own with matching fabric napkins. Curt Bauer makes its napkins in the same quality as its table cloths – in both damask and Mako satin. A damask napkin with woven-in patterns is not simply a wiping cloth but an independent textile element on the table.

The right size for your table

For a tablecloth to sit really well on your table, choosing the right size is crucial. Our recommendation:

• Measure the table: length and width, and for round tables the diameter
• Allow for the overhang: add 15 to 25 cm per side
• Consider the shape: Curt Bauer tablecloths are available in rectangular, round and oval versions
• Decide according to the occasion: for festive occasions the overhang may be more generous, while for everyday use 15 cm is sufficient

An overhang that is too short looks skimpy and unfinished, while one that is too long can get in the way when rising from the table. 20 cm per side is a tried-and-tested average for most occasions.

Made-to-measure and hem variants

A particular strength of the house of Curt Bauer are made-to-measure pieces in your desired size. If your preferred table length is not in the standard range – for example for particularly long dining tables, garden tables or bespoke furniture – we will gladly make the tablecloth individually for you. For the hem design too, you have a choice. The standard is a narrow hem that is unobtrusive and everyday-friendly. Other variants are also available on request:

• Narrow hem: the classic, understated standard version
• Wide hem: for a deliberately emphasised, festive edge
• Decorative hem: with a decorative embroidery or border element
• Drawn-thread hem: the finest variant, with an elaborate, almost antique-looking openwork detail

Table linen looks different on screen than on a real table – the fabric structure, the sheen, the way it behaves under dining-table light can only really be judged in the hand. Caring for your Curt Bauer table linen

In everyday use, table linen is subjected to more strain than most other home textiles – wine, sauce and candle wax are constant companions. With the right care, Curt Bauer table cloths nevertheless last for many years:

• washable at 60 degrees – ideal for reliably removing stains and bacteria
• colour detergent or liquid detergent without optical brighteners
• treat stains immediately: rinse out wine and sauce with cold water directly after the meal
• let candle wax harden, then iron it out carefully using blotting paper
• no fabric softener – it reduces absorbency
• dry gently, then iron slightly damp for the optimum smoothness
• do not mangle – the weave structure of the damask suffers as a result
